This class started with immense participation based on a book known as METAMORPHOSIS which in literal sense means transformation of an object or a living thing . Then the class was followed by active participation on the characters and the theme of the book. We also researched about the author FRANZ KAFKA .
FRANZ KAFKA was born in PRAGUE and died on 3rd JUNE 1924, he was a GERMAN language writer of visionary fiction books which are – THE TRIAL , METAMORPHOSIS etc. Kafka didn’t have a healthy relationship with his father because he felt oppressed by him for most of his life . He appears in many of kafka ‘s works, often as an overwhelming despotic power . Kafka was not married but was involved with other women . He was often ill , so sickness ultimately led him to retire in 1922. Kafka’s work reflected anxiety and alienation , and his characters often face absurd situations. FOR INSTANCE , in metamorphosis the PROTAGONIST wakes to find himself transformed into an vermin .
THEMES IN CHAPTER 1 : The story operates in a random chaotic universe, which has a supernatural significance . ISOLATION AND ALIENATION are major themes in the metamorphosis . GREGOR’S physical transformation makes him a creature , stripping him of his humanity in the eyes of his family . Gregor’s inability to communicate further isolates him . Gregor’s family often defines him by his ability to work .
CHARACTERS : There are 6 characters in chapter 1 which are GREGOR SAMSA , CLERK , MAID , MOTHER , FATHER AND 1 SISTER . Each one of them’s reactions to Gregors transformation was different as one of his sister reaction to his transformation was that she started crying thinking he will loose his job and also , she thought that he was sick . Now coming to his mother’s reaction , she was concered for his son as they were very close and there relationship was way better than his father and him . lastly , his fathers reaction was was a bit different from others as he was annoyed at Gregor as in what is he doing in his life .
lastly, i would like to mention that Gregor Samsa was surprised seeing himself transformed into a vermin but he was calm and was thinking about his life and deal with it positively . He was exceptionally calm and handled the situation very poisely .
In the end i gathered a lot of useful information based on this book and learnt few things based on the characters and themes based on the chapter 1 . I also brainstormed on the attributes of my personailty and then joting down some metaphors based on them . The metaphors which i have written are as follows:
