TIME ( WEEK 9 )

This week we were shown a movie which was called as HARISHCHANDRA’S FACTORY WHICH IS A MARATHI MOVIE and is directed by Parsesh mokashi . This movie revolves how the protagonist DADASAHEB PHALKE struggles in making his first movie – Raja harishchandra in 1913 which was declared as India’s first feature film from where the indian cinemas got her name , Most importantly, though, is the fact that the movie shows the family as being a supportive backbone for Phalke’s ambition. The movie talks about two important things one is that how phalke is fascinated and engrossed with making of the movies , secondly how he himself wants to make a movie where he struggles in making the movie .

Then we discussed about certain thmes and elemesnt from the movie such as :

  1. TIME PERIOD – black & white era , Britishers , the old currency notes
  2. PLOT & SUBPLOT – women were not allowed to act , the old costumes , transport , the city planning , the 7 island map , the technique and the making of the camera was different , the set ups were quite ancient and are very different from now days .
  3. BELIEF SYSTEMS – value of cupboard , the idea of romance was different .
  4. CHARACTER PLOTTING – elder son – the growth of character was very different in every scene – he was very supportive – he really cared about his parents ( went looking for his father when he was not home in the middle of the night ) – mature enough for his age – he even helped his father in the magic show .
  5. MAIN PLOT – talks about phalke’s growth in the movie how he use to be fascinated by the making of the movies , and how one day he though of establishing indian cinema . This was India’s first movie .
  6. METAPHOR – So, the plants in the movie starts to increase which refer to as people start increasing as well .

Overall this movie was great and I got to learn a lot of new things from it , also i learnt that how a movie could be broken down into several parts to know various different elements of the movie . After this we were given many movies to watch and were divided into several groups and we were told to make mind maps out of it .
