OBJECTS AS HISTORY ( week 2 )

In this week we started our class on INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATION and some other civilization like jorwe and malwa which come under the chalcolithic era – ( 8,000-1500 BC ) .

Then we started discussing the meaning of civilization and the difference between civilization and a settlement . A civilization is a society that is characterized by social and cultural development , with the presence of an authority . A civilization generally is found near the rivers , where people settle for long period of time . A settlement is where people settle or in simple words stay for a longer period of time . Also civilization has orders, social hierarchy etc .

Then we discussed the main elements which were present in this period :

  • city planning – which include houses, drainage systems
  • articles which were made up of terracotta , pottery was very famous in that period and also jewelry which was of great importance .
  • granaries
  • trading valuable items
  • burial systems
  • agriculture , hunting
  • sculptures – dancing girl and the mother goddess

We then moved onto trading and the economy of the area , trading with civilization that existed in that area and how valuable items were traded in that period . The economy was based on pottery , making jewelry , seals etc . We also discussed about the two hierarchy : social and authority , the authority consisted of sculptures such as priest king and pashupati and also through other finds such as items of luxury and normal everyday products . The example for social is the harappans also believed in LIFE AFTER DEATH which means that the dead bodies were buried with luxurious items such as jewelry , pottery and daily life . The bodies were buried at their own homes .

Then we moved onto talking about JORWE which is a site located in Maharashtra , which has 200 settlements in which Diamabad being an important site because it use to follow social hierarchy and the walls were used to create the fortification , they also had the practice of masonry and indicated surplus of food .

Lastly i would like to say that i learnt a lot from this class as we discussed about various important things such as the indus valley civilization and various different settlements present in that period and also learnt about the different elements and learnt about the strange burial system which every person use to follow at that period of time .
